The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to urgently address the country’s worsening food security crisis.
The motion, sponsored by Senators Sunday Karimi (APC-Kogi) and Ali Ndume (APC-Borno), highlighted soaring food prices and widespread market exploitation. Food inflation has reached a staggering 40.66% year-on-year, with prices of staples like beans, maize, and rice increasing by 100% to 300%.
Contributing factors include insecurity in food-producing areas, poor infrastructure, high transportation costs, and currency depreciation. However, merchant greed and profiteering are also significant issues. The Senate calls for immediate measures and transparency from the government to alleviate the crisis and provide relief to affected Nigerians.
