Rwanda has firmly rejected any obligation to repay the UK following the collapse of a £240 million migrant deportation scheme.

Initiated by the previous Conservative government and scrapped by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the plan faced legal hurdles and never materialized. Rwandan officials emphasized that the agreement did not stipulate repayment, asserting it was a partnership proposal without refund clauses.

This decision has stirred concerns among local workers dependent on construction jobs linked to the scheme. It also underscores broader uncertainties in UK immigration policy amidst a surge in Channel crossings, prompting fresh debates on effective border control strategies and international cooperation.
