The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice has found the Nigerian Government guilty of human rights abuses during the #EndSARS protest in October 2020.

The court ruled that the government’s use of force at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos breached multiple international human rights standards, including key articles of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The ruling cited violations of the rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and protection from inhuman treatment.

The court ordered the Nigerian government to pay N2 million in compensation to each victim named in the suit. This landmark decision is seen as a significant step towards accountability for the events of the protest. More details are expected to follow.
