Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has announced that Igbos in the southeast region will not join the planned protests against President Bola Tinubu’s administration from August 1st to 10th.
Secretary General Okechukwu Isiguzoro stated that past protests have resulted in significant loss of Igbo lives and property, and the current security situation in the southeast further precludes safe protests. He emphasized that Igbos have historically been treated as “sacrificial lambs” during nationwide unrest. Instead, Ohanaeze is focusing on dialogue with the federal government to secure the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
The organization also urged Igbos in other regions of Nigeria to avoid participating in the protests to ensure their safety. Ohanaeze reiterated its commitment to peace and the well-being of the Igbo community, calling for restraint and prudence during this period.
