At least 58 out of 164 member states of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have endorsed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for a second term as Director-General.
During a WTO General Council meeting on July 22, numerous member countries praised her leadership and accomplishments during her first term. The African Group formally requested her reappointment, initiating the process for her potential second term. Okonjo-Iweala expressed gratitude for the support, indicating she will soon announce her decision.
Serving since March 1, 2021, she is the first woman and African to hold this position. Prior to her role at the WTO, she was Nigeria’s Finance Minister and briefly Foreign Minister, and had a distinguished 25-year career at the World Bank, rising to Managing Director of Operations.
