At least 229 people have perished in two landslides in Ethiopia’s Gofa zone.
The disaster, triggered by heavy rains, saw residents desperately digging through debris with their hands in search of survivors. The first landslide struck a remote region, followed by a second one that buried many who had rushed to assist those affected by the initial slide.
Among the victims were local leaders, teachers, and health professionals. Search and rescue efforts continue as the community grapples with the aftermath, with five survivors currently receiving medical treatment. The region has been battered by seasonal rains, causing widespread flooding and displacement.
