In an important political step, Kenya’s President William Ruto has appointed key allies of opposition leader Raila Odinga to his cabinet, including the powerful finance and energy ministries.
This marks the first time the opposition has held such roles since 2008. The appointments come as President Ruto faces widespread protests and a major crisis in his presidency, driven by public dissatisfaction over economic conditions and proposed tax increases.
The opposition members appointed are John Mbadi (Finance), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy and Petroleum), Hassan Joho (Mining and Blue Economy), and Wycliffe Oparanya (Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development).
Despite Ruto’s call for a “broad-based government” to address Kenya’s challenges, critics argue that this move is more about political deal-making than genuine reform. The appointments await parliamentary approval, which is expected to be granted due to political agreements between the main parties.
