Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general election, have differing opinions on a planned nationwide protest against rising living costs and economic hardship.

Peter Obi, supporting the protest during a visit to Governor Otti’s country home, emphasized the citizens’ constitutional right to protest, noting that “hunger and hopelessness are driving the agitation.” He stressed that the protest should be conducted legally.

However, Governor Otti, the only governor from the Labour Party, disagreed, highlighting the economic crisis as a consequence of past governance failures. He stated, “It’s true that things are difficult, but protesting without police approval is illegal.” Otti advised against protests, especially in Abia, citing potential negative consequences, such as increased hardship.

This clash reflects a broader debate on the appropriate response to the current economic challenges facing the nation.
