Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has declared a nationwide curfew beginning at 4 p.m. to curb planned hunger protests across Nigeria.

The curfew aims to prevent any escalation of unrest and to maintain public order. The police have urged protesters to conclude their activities before the curfew and to communicate their grievances peacefully.

Organizers are required to submit participants’ details to local commissioners of police, including names and addresses, to facilitate effective communication and ensure the safety of all involved. This move is part of a broader effort to manage the protests, which highlight issues such as poor governance, economic hardship, and widespread hunger. The police stressed that these measures are necessary to prevent any unlawful activities and to protect both the protesters and the public.

The protests are set to commence on August 1 and are expected to be widespread, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The authorities are on high alert, preparing to respond swiftly to any incidents that may arise during this period.
