Nigeria’s women’s basketball team made history by reaching the Olympic quarterfinals for the first time. Ezinna Kalu led the team with 21 points in a 79-70 victory over Canada.
The win marks Nigeria’s first Olympic victories in basketball since 2004. Captain Amy Okonkwo, despite injuring her shoulder, played a crucial role in Nigeria’s dominant third quarter. The team celebrated at midcourt, capturing the moment with photos and videos. Canada, ranked fifth in the world, was eliminated without a win in three games.
Elizabeth Balogun and Promise Amukamara added 14 and 12 points, respectively, contributing to the historic win. This achievement is particularly significant as the team was denied access to Nigeria’s boat for the opening ceremony. Nigeria now awaits their next opponent, with hopes high for further success. This milestone victory underscores the growing strength of African teams on the global stage.
