A devastating landslide at a garbage dump in Kampala has resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people, with rescuers continuing their search for survivors. The disaster struck the Kiteezi landfill following torrential rains that caused a massive collapse, burying homes, livestock, and residents as they slept.

Rescue Efforts and Casualties
Initially reported as eight deaths, the toll has risen as the search continues, according to police spokesperson Patrick Onyango. “The rescue operation is ongoing until we are certain that no one else is trapped,” Onyango said. Fourteen people and several animals have been rescued so far, but more victims are feared to be buried under the debris. About 1,000 people have been displaced by the incident, with relief efforts underway.

Background and Impact
The Kiteezi landfill has been Kampala’s primary waste disposal site for decades, leading to its hazardous buildup. Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago described the situation as a “disaster waiting to happen,” highlighting the landfill’s overcapacity. Similar incidents have plagued sub-Saharan Africa, with notable tragedies in Ethiopia and Mozambique in recent years.
