In a deadly weekend attack, over 100 people, including villagers and soldiers, were killed by al-Qaida-linked jihadists in Barsalogho, central Burkina Faso.

The villagers were assisting security forces in digging trenches when the attackers struck. The jihadists claimed “total control” over a militia position in the area, which is strategically located near the capital, Ouagadougou.

Burkina Faso’s Security Minister Mahamadou Sana condemned the attack, vowing not to “accept such barbarity” and confirmed that the government had responded with ground and air support. Despite these efforts, nearly half of Burkina Faso remains outside government control, with the ongoing violence displacing millions and leading to thousands of deaths. The lack of efficient air cover and control over borders with Mali and Niger continues to fuel the insurgency, making the security situation increasingly dire.
