Nigeria has made history as the first African nation to receive mpox vaccines, obtaining 10,000 doses from the United States. The handover ceremony on August 27, 2024, in Abuja, was described by Dr. Muyi Aina, CEO of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, as symbolizing “more than a transfer of vaccines; it exemplifies the power of international cooperation in addressing global health challenges.”
The Nigerian government is prioritizing vaccination in five states with the highest mpox cases: Bayelsa, Edo, Cross-River, Lagos, and Rivers. Despite the limited global supply, Dr. Aina noted, “We are getting 10,000 of the about 200,000 doses that are available globally.” The U.S. envoy to Nigeria explained that Nigeria’s strategic vaccination plan was a key factor in it being the first recipient. Mpox cases have been reported in over 10 of Nigeria’s 36 states, with the Democratic Republic of Congo being the global outbreak epicenter.
