Nigeria has been ranked eleventh among 26 countries with the highest divorce rates, according to a report by Divorce.com, a U.S.-based website.

The report reveals that Nigeria’s divorce rate reached 2.9% in 2023, largely due to the growing financial independence of women. Divorce.com states that “women in sub-Saharan Africa, especially Nigeria, are increasingly initiating divorce, reflecting shifting gender dynamics.”

The report also highlights how “religion, local divorce laws, and limited social support” contribute to the varying divorce rates across different regions. In comparison, the Maldives, which tops the list with a 5.52% divorce rate, sees similar trends where “women’s financial independence plays a key role.”
