During a state visit to Beijing on September 2, 2024, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to strengthen the already robust relationship between their nations.The visit, which coincides with the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, highlighted the strategic importance both countries place on their bilateral ties.
President Xi emphasized that “greater unity and cooperation between China and South Africa meets the expectations of the two peoples” and noted that South Africa holds a special place in China’s diplomatic history, with Ramaphosa being the first African leader to visit China before a FOCAC summit.
Ramaphosa, reaffirming South Africa’s support for the one-China policy, described the relationship as a “foundation of an unwavering and valuable friendship.” The leaders also expressed their mutual commitment to advancing modernization and enhancing global governance.
