Burkina Faso has unveiled new biometric passports, marking a significant step in distancing itself from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The new passports notably exclude the ECOWAS logo, symbolizing the country’s break from the 15-member regional bloc following a military coup that brought the current government to power.

Security Minister Mahamadou Sana stated, “There’s no ECOWAS logo on this passport… This is just a realization of Burkina Faso’s decision to withdraw from the body since January.”

The withdrawal has raised concerns about the potential impact on regional integration and freedom of movement within ECOWAS. The shift occurs as Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali face growing threats from insurgent groups linked to al Qaeda and ISIS.
