The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to reverse the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s (NNPCL) recent fuel price hike, labeling it illegal and unconstitutional.
In a letter dated 7 September 2024, SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, warned that the price increase has worsened the economic hardship faced by citizens and represents a breach of Nigeria’s constitutional and human rights obligations.
The organization further urged Tinubu to investigate alleged corruption and mismanagement within NNPCL, stating that “your government appears to be penalising the poor instead of addressing corruption.” SERAP has given the president 48 hours to respond or face legal action in the public interest. The letter emphasized that investigating the NNPCL aligns with Nigeria’s anti-corruption laws and international obligations.
