Armed men attacked a military training school in Mali’s capital, Bamako, early Tuesday morning, with the army describing the attackers as “terrorists.” The assailants targeted the gendarmerie school near the city’s airport, which was among several “sensitive points” hit during coordinated strikes.
In a statement, the army confirmed that the situation was now “under control.” Two security personnel were reported wounded, according to officials speaking to AFP. Residents were assured they could continue their daily activities, though international organizations, including the UN, advised staff to restrict movement.
Bamako’s Modibo Keita International Airport was also closed temporarily following the attack. Despite ongoing efforts by the military, including support from Russia’s Wagner group, Mali continues to struggle with a long-standing Islamist insurgency, and the identity of the attackers remains unclear.
