A tragic accident occurred along the Ijebu-Ode-Ore Expressway in Ogun State, where at least 18 passengers were burnt beyond recognition in a lone crash involving a Toyota Hiace bus. The accident was reportedly caused by a jerry can of fuel inside the vehicle, which spilled and ignited after the bus hit a failed section of the road.

According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), “The PMS poured on the floor of the bus and later dropped on the exhaust pipe, causing the vehicle to catch fire in transit.”

The driver, who was partially burnt, was rescued and taken to Rona Hospital in Ijebu Ode, while the bodies of the deceased were transported to the State Hospital Mortuary. Akinbiyi added, “Drivers should desist from storing fuel in Jerry cans to avoid incidents like this.”
