The Nigerian government has announced plans to backdate the payment of the new minimum wage for civil servants to July 2024. Despite the agreement reached by a 16-member committee responsible for adjusting salaries, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have voiced strong opposition.

According to the NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah, “The backdating to July is not fair. It is not acceptable.” The TUC also expressed disappointment, stating that workers were initially promised that the wage would take effect from May. Both unions argue that the recent hike in petrol prices has significantly diminished the benefits of the new N70,000 wage.
