The Lagos State Government has enforced a court order limiting protests on October 1 to two designated venues: Freedom Park and Peace Park. State Attorney General Lawal Pedro (SAN) reiterated that while Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu supports residents’ rights to protest, such activities must not disrupt public order or economic activities.

He stated, “It is lawful for the Governor or the Attorney General to direct the Commissioner of Police to maintain public safety.” Pedro emphasized that the right to assembly is not absolute and reminded organizers to respect the court’s interim injunction.

Despite this, organizers of the #FearlessOctober1 protest have declared their intention to proceed, asserting their constitutional right to demonstrate against issues such as fuel subsidy removal and naira devaluation. They have sought police protection for the event, set to begin at Ikeja Under Bridge at 7:30 am on the day of Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary.
