In Sudan’s ongoing civil war, now lasting 17 months, the army is determined to continue its offensive, recently launching a bid to reclaim Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Assistant Commander-in-Chief Lt Gen Ibrahim Gabir stated, “Peace talks can go on, but the army will not stop for that,” underlining their commitment amid international ceasefire efforts.
The conflict has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, with over half the population facing hunger. While US envoy Tom Perriello noted slight improvements in humanitarian access, much more is needed. Gabir addressed allegations of war crimes, defending the army against accusations of causing famine and blaming the RSF for obstructing aid.
He remarked, “The Sudanese army are not angels… but it’s individuals I’m talking about.” He also hinted at discussions with Iran regarding weapons and highlighted foreign support for the RSF. Concluding on a hopeful note, Gabir asserted, “Sudan will conquer, and Sudan will be rebuilt.”
