Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent member of the Labour Party, has urged politicians to either fight for their constituents or step down, especially in light of the recent Rivers State Local Government elections. Speaking on Soar TV, Okonkwo commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his commitment to ensuring the elections proceeded despite significant challenges, including opposition from the police and supporters of Nyesom Wike.
He emphasized, “If you’re not willing to take the risk… step aside,” highlighting the importance of leaders who are ready to resist injustice and advocate for democracy. Okonkwo called for politicians who are determined to protect electoral integrity, stating, “I’m looking for leaders who would say, ‘nobody will rig my election.’”
He further stressed that the political landscape requires bold leadership to confront systemic failures, asserting that true representatives must be willing to challenge any attempt to undermine the democratic process. Okonkwo’s statements reflect a growing frustration among citizens for accountable governance in Nigeria.
