On October 7, 2024, the Eleme Local Government Area secretariat in Rivers State was set on fire by suspected hoodlums. Newly elected chairman Brain Gokpa arrived with his councillors and supporters, only to find parts of the complex engulfed in flames.”This incident raises concerns of escalating violence in the region,” sources indicate, following the swearing-in of newly elected chairmen after recent local government elections.

Rivers State has been plagued by political turmoil, with the ongoing conflict between current Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike contributing to the unrest. The elections are viewed by many as a “referendum on who truly controls the grassroots.” The Wike camp has been notably opposed to the conduct of the elections.
