South African prosecutors have decided not to pursue criminal charges against President Cyril Ramaphosa in connection with a hidden cash scandal that came to light over two years ago. The scandal, linked to the theft of $4 million in cash from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm in Limpopo province, had raised serious concerns about the president’s conduct.
The criminal complaint was initially filed by former South African spy chief Arthur Fraser, who accused Ramaphosa of irregularities in handling the 2020 theft. Fraser alleged that the president had hidden the large sum of money and committed other financial irregularities. However, Ramaphosa denied any wrongdoing, explaining that the money in question came from the legitimate sale of buffaloes at his farm.
After an extensive investigation, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with a criminal case, effectively clearing Ramaphosa of any charges.
The decision comes as a relief to the president, who has faced intense political pressure and scrutiny over the scandal, even as he continues to lead the African National Congress (ANC) and the nation.
