Homosexuality remains illegal in Nigeria and can result in imprisonment for up to 14 years within the country’s conventional court system. The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, reaffirmed the organization’s steadfast stance against the legalization of homosexuality. This declaration was made during the concluding event of the 2023 National Bible Quiz Competition, which was jointly organized by the Voice of Evangelism and CAN in Abuja.
Archbishop Daniel Okoh called upon Nigerians to resist the growing pressure to endorse practices associated with homosexuality. In a society experiencing changing norms and increased acceptance of crossdressing, homosexuality, same-sex marriages, and cultism, he emphasized the role of Scriptures in helping young individuals discover their true identities. He stressed that nurturing a genuine sense of identity would empower younger generations to form meaningful relationships with God and successfully navigate various life environments. Additionally, the CAN President issued a cautionary message regarding an over reliance on electronic Scriptures, highlighting the potential for tampered versions available on mobile phones.
