The National Election Commission (NEC) of Liberia has announced a presidential run-off election on November 14, 2023, due to none of the 20 candidates securing over 50% of the votes in the initial round. The sitting president George Weah and former vice president Joseph Boakai emerged as the top two candidates in the first round, with Weah receiving 43.83% and Boakai receiving 43.44% of the votes. Campaigning for the run-off will resume from October 24 to November 12. This situation mirrors the 2017 presidential election when Weah and Boakai also faced a run-off, which Weah won. The 2023 election marks a significant event in Liberia’s democratic history, with a shift to biometric technology for voter registration. A significant percentage of registered voters participated, but there were incidents of disruptions and misconduct, resulting in some temporary staff being detained.
