Groundbreaking as former Zambian President Edgar Lungu’s comeback to the political arena has faced immediate challenge with his attempt to return to the former ruling party Patriotic Front (PF) Secretariat being abruptly obstructed by a heavy police presence.
The PF Secretariat in Lusaka is currently swarming with state police, fortified after the newly elected PF President, Miles Sampa, expressed concerns about potential vandalism and assaults from Lungu’s faction within the party, led by Given Lubinda.
Sampa’s directive mandates that non-party members are barred from entering the Secretariat, thereby restricting Lungu’s access; moreover, the former President has been instructed to reapply for PF membership if he desires to rejoin the organization.
Lungu’s reentry into active politics is not only devoid of new political strategies or vision, but it also signifies his detachment from the party that he once led.
While receiving support from fervent cadres within the party, Lungu’s return is accompanied by a caution from state police against the potential reemergence of past hooliganism, an aspect that marred his previous tenure.
