The Controller General, Haliru Nababa, sought an increase to N3,000 per day per inmate. This revelation triggered outrage among lawmakers, questioning the fairness of prioritizing canine nutrition over that of incarcerated individuals, particularly those awaiting trial. Committee members highlighted concerns about the insufficient budget and lack of detailed meal plans, emphasizing the need for humane treatment within correctional facilities.

The revelation has prompted urgent calls for a review of resource allocation within Nigeria’s correctional system.
