Ministers from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger convened in Ouagadougou to discuss the establishment of a confederation, following their withdrawal from ECOWAS.

This move comes after the three nations initiated a defense and economic pact known as the Alliance of Sahel States. General Kassoum Coulibaly emphasized the need for developing legal structures for the confederation, while General Salifou Modi expressed optimism for its efficient functioning.

The confederation aligns with their goal of uniting as West African neighbors within a federation, with the possibility of establishing a common currency to break free from perceived colonial influences. This development follows their suspension from ECOWAS due to military coups and ongoing challenges with jihadist violence.
