Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has tragically passed away while in custody, according to Russian officials. The Federal Prison Service reported that Navalny felt unwell after a walk on Friday and subsequently lost consciousness.

“All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, which did not yield positive results. Doctors of the ambulance stated the death of the convict,” the prison service stated.

Navalny, a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was serving a prison sentence in a remote Arctic penal colony at the time of his death. The causes of his death are currently under investigation.

The news of Navalny’s death has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability both within Russia and internationally.

Navalny’s supporters have long raised concerns about his treatment in custody and have accused Russian authorities of targeting him for his political activism.
