Despite federal government pleas, organized labour has initiated a nationwide strike to demand a new national minimum wage.

Negotiations broke down last week after the government’s revised proposal of N60,000 was rejected by labour unions, who are holding firm on their demand for N494,000. Various unions, including those in aviation, electricity, banking, and health sectors, are participating in the strike, aiming to pressure the government into meeting their wage demands. The federal government has deemed the strike illegal, citing ongoing negotiations and an existing court order against the industrial action.
