The death toll for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage has reached 1,301, with Saudi authorities attributing the fatalities to extreme heat and unauthorized trips.

The government reported that 83% of the deceased lacked official Hajj permits, leading many to endure perilous journeys on foot under intense heat exceeding 125°F. Egyptian authorities have revoked the licenses of 16 tourism companies involved in illegal pilgrimages, with hundreds of Egyptians among the dead. The tragedy has sparked calls for better organization and infrastructure to ensure the safety of all pilgrims.
