Nollywood actress Destiny Etiko has been criticized by Kenyans for a social media post perceived as insensitive amidst their tax protests.
Following demonstrations against a now-withdrawn finance bill proposing new taxes, Etiko’s Instagram post, praising Nigerians’ resilience, was seen as a slight against Kenyans. Numerous Kenyan commenters rebuked her, prompting Etiko to clarify that she was unaware of the protests and did not intend to mock Kenyans.
Despite her apology, the backlash highlights the sensitivity surrounding the issue and the deep frustrations of Kenyans regarding their socio-political situation. Etiko’s response underscores the importance of awareness and sensitivity when addressing international audiences on social media.
