France has commenced a critical parliamentary election with voters casting ballots for the first round.

The outcome, expected to be influenced by economic discontent and dissatisfaction with President Macron’s leadership, will shape the country’s foreign policy and management of its military. Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigration National Rally is projected to lead, challenging Macron’s centrist alliance. A new left-wing coalition also poses a significant challenge.

The election spans both mainland France and its overseas territories, with results anticipated late Sunday. In New Caledonia, polling closed early due to ongoing unrest and a curfew, highlighting tensions in French territories. The election will determine the 577 members of the National Assembly, impacting France’s legislative future.
