2024: A 24-year-old woman, Blessing Okonkwo, has confessed to selling her three-year-old brother, Friday Okonkwo, for N410,000 to cope with severe economic hardship.
Blessing deceived her mother, Hauwa Lawan, by claiming she was enrolling the child in school. The boy was sold to Efunaya Nabufe, who trafficked him to Enugu. Blessing used the proceeds to buy a grinding machine and fund her traditional wedding.
The crime was uncovered when Blessing’s father demanded to know the child’s whereabouts before approving her marriage. The police have arrested both suspects, and an investigation is ongoing.
