West African leaders have convened at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja for the 63rd Ordinary Summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The meeting marks the end of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, set to conclude on July 9, 2024. Representatives from 12 member states are present, with discussions expected to include the appointment of a new chairperson.

There is speculation that President Tinubu’s tenure might be extended due to ongoing instability in the region. The summit’s agenda also includes addressing the recent spate of military coups and political instability affecting several member states. Leaders are expected to deliberate on strategies to restore democratic governance and enhance regional security.
