African heads of state have arrived in Beijing for the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, which aims to strengthen China’s strategic partnership with the continent in the post-Covid era.

The summit, taking place from September 4-6, will focus on key topics like climate, energy, digital cooperation, and sustainable development. Analysts warn that African countries should prioritize mutually beneficial cooperation and beware of high debt burdens associated with Chinese investments.

As one expert noted, “African countries need to rethink the future direction of the partnership… If approached correctly, FOCAC could foster a new era of cooperation that is both sustainable and mutually beneficial.”
