Authorities in Benin Republic have thwarted a planned coup set for September 27, 2024, arresting three key suspects, including Republican Guard Commander Djimon Tevoedjre, former Sports Minister Oswald Homeky, and businessman Olivier Boko. Homeky was caught delivering 1.5 billion CFA francs ($2.5 million) to Tevoedjre to fund the coup.

Boko, who reportedly has presidential ambitions for 2026, was detained in Cotonou. The country’s special prosecutor for financial crimes and terrorism, Elonm Metonou, revealed that the money was discovered in six bags handed over in a Toyota Prado with fake license plates. As the investigation unfolds, Benin faces rising political and security challenges.
