At least 39 migrants from the Horn of Africa have died after their boat capsized off the coast of Yemen, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and local officials.

The vessel, carrying 260 migrants, sank on Monday due to strong winds. Rescue operations are ongoing for the 150 still missing, while the IOM is aiding 71 survivors.

Local authorities in Rudum, east of Aden, reported that the migrants, mostly from Ethiopia, were en route to Gulf states. Despite the ongoing war in Yemen, the UN noted an influx of 97,000 migrants from the Horn of Africa last year.
