At least 100 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a fuel tanker exploded near the village of Majiyain in northern Nigeria’s Jigawa State, police confirmed Tuesday.

The tragedy occurred when the driver lost control of the tanker on a busy highway, causing it to overturn and spill fuel. As crowds gathered to collect the spilled fuel, the tanker ignited, erupting into a devastating blaze.

Authorities warn that the death toll could climb further, as many of the injured are in critical condition. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and the accident highlights the dangerous reality of fuel collection incidents in impoverished areas, where similar accidents have claimed lives in the past.
