Former President Edgar Lungu’s recent legal battles and public outcry over his eligibility to contest the 2026 elections have once again thrust him into the spotlight. While his concerns about the state of democracy and governance under President Hakainde Hichilema may hold merit, it is time for Lungu to reconsider his political ambitions. Having served as Zambia’s leader for seven years, his legacy is already cemented. There is no need to chase another presidential term.
It is undeniable that Hichilema has consolidated his power base, and fighting him politically will be an uphill battle. Lungu should acknowledge that Zambian politics has shifted, and rather than engaging in a divisive personal battle, he can remain relevant in other ways. One potent move would be to endorse a fresh, viable opposition leader. This would provide him with the moral high ground and offer a new face for those dissatisfied with Hichilema’s leadership.
Lungu’s experience could be invaluable in shaping the future of Zambia, but it does not have to be through the presidency. By letting go of his ambitions, he can become a statesman rather than a contender, influencing the country’s future from the sidelines.
Zambia deserves a peaceful and stable political landscape, and Lungu has the opportunity to contribute to that legacy.
