US President Joe Biden has called on Hamas to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza by the start of Ramadan, amidst growing concerns over the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The call comes as famine threatens the 2.4 million residents of Gaza, prompting joint food aid drops by the US, Jordan, Egypt, and France. Biden’s plea follows talks in Cairo between Hamas and US envoys, aimed at securing a six-week truce, the release of hostages, and the flow of aid into Gaza. The negotiations have yet to involve Israel, which has demanded a list of living hostages from Hamas.

The deteriorating situation in Gaza has drawn criticism from top US officials, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who expressed deep concern about the humanitarian conditions. The urgency for a ceasefire intensifies as Ramadan approaches, with fears that continued violence could escalate tensions in the region.
