An incident unfolded today as a United States military V-22 Osprey aircraft crashed into the ocean near Japan’s Yakushima Island.

ADVERTISE WITH US TODAY

The aircraft, carrying eight people, went down around 2:47 p.m. local time. Witnesses reported the left engine ablaze as the aircraft descended towards the sea. The coast guard and U.S. forces in the region are actively involved in gathering information about the crash. At this time, details about the condition of those onboard remain unknown. Rescue operations are underway, and investigations are in progress to ascertain the cause of the crash. This event follows a similar incident in August when a U.S. Osprey crashed off northern Australia, resulting in the loss of three Marines. The Osprey, a tilt-rotor aircraft utilized by the U.S. Marines, U.S. Navy, and Japan’s Self Defense Forces, has previously faced controversy regarding its safety. While the U.S. military and Japan vouch for its safety, this incident will undoubtedly prompt a closer examination of its operational integrity.
