Ghana’s opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), staged protests across all 16 regional capitals, demanding an independent audit of the voter roll ahead of the December general election. The NDC claims to have uncovered nearly 300,000 irregularities, including unauthorized transfers and deletions of voter names.
“We are not asking for a big favor, we are demanding our right to free and fair elections,” NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah emphasized during the protest in Accra. The party is pushing for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to oversee the audit, with NDC’s Director of Elections, Omane Boamah, stating, “The EC has something to hide.”
Despite these demands, the Electoral Commission has dismissed the allegations, calling the request for a forensic audit “misguided.” The NDC remains resolute, warning that failure to address these issues could lead to a democratic crisis.
