Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich set a new women’s marathon world record at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, finishing in 2:09:56. This achievement eclipses the previous record of 2:11:53 held by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa and makes her the first woman to win the Chicago Marathon three times.

Chepngetich dedicated her victory to Kelvin Kiptum, the late men’s world record holder, stating, “The world record has come back to Kenya.” She highlighted her long-standing goal of breaking the record, saying, “This is my dream that has come true.”

John Korir won the men’s race in 2:02:44, inspired by Kiptum’s legacy. Korir noted, “I had to believe in myself and try to do my best.”
