Denmark has announced the closure of its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso, citing limited “scope for action in the Sahel region” due to recent military coups. This move is part of Denmark’s broader strategy to reorganize its cooperation with Africa.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that this reorganization aligns with the EU’s aim to remain Africa’s “preferred partner” amid increasing Chinese and Russian influence. In response to the shifting political landscape, where both Mali and Burkina Faso have turned to Russia and its Wagner mercenaries for support, Denmark will redirect its efforts by opening new missions in Senegal, Tunisia, and Rwanda, and strengthening its presence in other African countries.
The new strategy will also focus on boosting trade and development assistance, particularly in water initiatives. Despite the closures, Denmark is committed to maintaining strong ties with Africa, appointing a special representative for the Great Lakes and Sahel region to ensure ongoing engagement.
