Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, the mayor of Cotija in Michoacán state, was shot dead on Monday shortly after Mexico elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sánchez Figueroa was attacked while walking home from a gym with her bodyguard, both of whom later died in the hospital. The incident occurred amidst a violent election season marked by numerous candidate assassinations. Sheinbaum, set to take office on October 1, faces significant challenges, including rampant gang violence and high femicide rates. An investigation into the attack on Sánchez Figueroa is underway.
