Fresh banknotes featuring King Charles III’s image were introduced into circulation in the UK on Wednesday.

The new £5, £10, £20, and £50 notes will be circulated alongside those featuring the late Queen Elizabeth II. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey called it “a historic moment,” noting that the changeover will be gradual as damaged notes are replaced or demand increases.

The design, based on a 2013 photograph, was approved by King Charles III in late 2022. This marks the first time the sovereign’s image has changed on UK banknotes.
