At the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, made a strong appeal for debt forgiveness for Nigeria and other developing nations. He highlighted the economic strain caused by overwhelming debt.

He urged global leaders to offer relief and reforms, particularly to multilateral financial institutions. Tinubu emphasized that meaningful progress in the Global South is unattainable without debt concessions and criticized the international community for failing to address key global challenges such as poverty, terrorism, and inequality.

He also called for reforms to the United Nations Security Council, advocating for permanent seats for African nations. The President stressed the importance of multilateralism in tackling global issues and warned against the rise of nationalism and unilateralism.
